Bill Coleman

Born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1922, Bill Coleman was an Australian artist known for his distinctive stylised figurative works and earthy, atmospheric colour palette. He studied art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he developed a visual language that would become strongly associated with his interpretation of Australian life and landscape.

Coleman’s work is characterised by simplified forms, expressive composition, and grounded tonal palettes that evoke a distinctly Australian sensibility. His figures and settings often feel both timeless and familiar, reflecting everyday life through a modernist lens.

A major retrospective exhibition in 1986, held across the Bendigo Art Gallery, Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, and Sale Regional Gallery, brought renewed critical attention to his practice and cemented his reputation within Australian art history.

Coleman’s works are held in significant public and private collections, including the New York Public Library, as well as numerous regional galleries and collections throughout Australia.
