Swiss-born Sali Herman arrived in Melbourne in 1937 as a mature post-impressionist artist having previously studied in Zurich and Paris, he also became one of Australia’s first war artists. Best known for his distinctive paintings of Sydney’s inner city streets and his portraits of cats.
Herman was a four time winner of the Wynne Prize in 1944 for McElhone Stairs, in 1962 for The Devils Bridge, in 1965 for The Red House and again in 1967 for Ravenswood 1.
