Description
Roland Wakelin was born in New Zealand in 1887 and settled in Sydney in 1912 where he worked as a commercial artist and studied painting with both Roy de Maistre and Grace Cossington Smith.
He developed a style to his paintings of breaking the picture with strokes of bold colour which had a certain similarity to the style of Cossington Smith. Later Wakelin paintings entered a more romantic phase and included the harbour, domestic life, still life and portraits as subject matter.
Wakelin is represented in major Australian public and private collections.
