Max Middleton was an Australian En plein air (‘in the open air) painter, faithfully rendering what he saw. He had an extraordinary ability to capture light and shade on canvas.
In Australia, Middleton studied under Septimus Power and in 1950 went to Europe where he was greatly was influenced by JMW Turner.
His work practice was to make quick studies that captured the the atmosphere of a setting, then often he would then use these as reference for larger studio pictures.
